BIP32 allowed Web3 users to interface with wallets in a way that is familiar today. The Bitcoin network standardized the solution used across most blockchains still to this day: BIP32. Now, as effective as that solution is for privacy and custody, if a person has 1,000 accounts, they would have to remember 1,000 keys 一 not a terribly scalable user experience. To generate an Ethereum address, get what is known as the Keccak-256 hash from the public key and take the last 20 bytes from the resulting string. If you have an Ethereum address, you have a “spot” on the elliptic curve. When someone asks you to send them their public key, they are effectively asking you to send them your x and y coordinates, just expressed in a different manner.Ī public key is derived from a random private number that is generated through random repeated additions of a known point.Ī Web3 address is just a representation of one’s public key. Each point on an elliptic curve is a public point, or a public key, that has an x and y coordinate. Not all elliptic curves are useful, but the curve used in Bitcoin and Ethereum (known as secp256k1) has some interesting properties. A common elliptical equation is: y2=x3 + ax + b, where values a and b give an elliptic curve different cryptographic features. An elliptical is a set of points that satisfy some curve equation. The foundation of a Web3 wallet is an elliptic curve, or elliptical. 11.7m daily active users will suddenly be delivered native crypto support in their everyday browser.
